The overlook parking lot on Airport Road fills rapidly before sunset. The Airport Loop Trail (3.3 miles) provides multiple composition angles away from the crowds at the main overlook.

The main overlook is a scrum at sunset. I will not pretend otherwise. Cars stack along Airport Road by five in the afternoon in October, and the small dirt platform fills with tripods and phones and people trying to occupy the same six feet of rim. The view is genuinely extraordinary, which is why everyone is there, and the photograph from that exact spot has been made ten thousand times. So I walk. The Airport Loop Trail runs three and a third miles around the base of the mesa, and within ten minutes you are alone with the same red rocks the crowd is photographing from above. The west side of the loop puts Cathedral Rock in your frame as the light goes long, and the rock itself takes on that particular Sedona red that does not really exist anywhere else - somewhere between rust and ember, deepening as the sun drops. The hour I keep returning for is not golden hour exactly. It is the ten minutes after, when the sun has cleared the horizon and the sky behind Thunder Mountain goes from orange to a bruised pink, and the rock holds light longer than it should. The crowds at the top are already walking back to their cars. The trail goes quiet. The formations layer into each other in a way that a wide lens can almost handle and a slightly longer lens handles better. Winter is underrated here. The light is lower, the air is cleaner, and a dusting of snow on red rock is a photograph that does not look quite real even when you are standing in front of it. Come on a weekday if you can. Bring a headlamp for the walk back.
